Duplicating & Transparency Tools

Watch the video for a quick tip tutorial on duplicating and transparency tools in the iESLp productivity app.

#TIPTUESDAY#Pre-Reading, Early Numeracy and Lituracy

Pre-reading, numeracy and early literacy is easy with the transparency and duplicate features of the iESLP app.  Make it easy to create matching boards that promote skill in these areas. Choose a theme, add in pictures, duplicate then use the transparency tool to create a shadow image to match to.  Can be used for letters and number match as well.

Differentiated Instruction On The Go

Adaptive programming for inclusive education means meeting the child were they are at.

Today I am very excited to share a video of my dear friend Gabrielle, with her permission (and of course her mom’s). Gabrielle is one of the students that inspired me to create the iESLp App.
Creating material on the spot, that is age appropriate and curriculum related for adaptive
programming for the emergent reader can be very tricky. Supporting the students to be able to access material on their individual learning level and participate in the lessons are crucial for inclusive education. This is what my dream for iESLp is, to create interactive worksheets and material that students can easily access, to fully participate INDEPENDENTLY, in an inclusive environment.
Gabrielle is currently in a full inclusive classroom, with adaptive programming to support her learning style and level. Gabrielle wanted to make a “vlog”, to show how she uses iESLp. This vlog shows her reading the summary that her teacher and teacher assistant created for her of a character in their novel study. They create boards, interactive, as well as structured reading to not only support the understanding of the novel study but also to scaffold learning of new vocabulary and use of correct grammar and syntax.

Interactive Boards For Sentence Expansion

While having a child work the iPad is a great way for them to practice what they have learnt, we first need to do the necessary teaching for the practice to take place. Building boards that set up errorless learning when working with learners is a way to do the initial teaching.

Why errorless learning?

Errorless learning helps build the correct neuropathway from the start.  When we model what is expected we set children up for success.
Modelling what is expected prior to the child attempting to do the task, the child is watching what is the ‘right’ response before they attempt the task. If the task is set up in such a way they cannot make a mistake. They have the correct ‘pattern’ for their brain to begin with.

The iESLp boards are interactive in the sense that the teacher/therapist is able to design boards for teaching/therapy to teach from, then let the child repeat the activity as many times as they need until mastered. This repetition can be guided by an instructional assistant at first, working towards independence.

The boards can also be used to help with early literacy and introduction to paragraph writing about winter.

Next week we will look at a different aspect of how iESLp can be used interactively.  Omazing Kids has caught onto this unique way of using the app.

Enjoy your coffee or tea as you check out these boards below from iESLp!  See you next week.

Our Saturday Visit

What’s new and hot with iESLp App?

Our Saturday Visit, a weekly piece that will help you develop your skills in using this productivity tool that support the SLP therapist, early childhood educators and all other creative minds who like build unique, individualized and specific learning materials.

Optimizing the use of the app involves seeing how it fits into your work environment.  For speech language pathologist it can become the therapy tool you pull out of your purse or for the early childhood educator it is an errorless learning tool with limitless repetition options that are paperless.

Today we will look at the interactive and sharable piece of iESLp App.  For us interactive is about bringing the use of iESLp APP on the iPad into the everyday functional world of the child while creating human interaction with the child.  It is were our personal interaction meets what technology can help the child do, communicate and learn from.

Interacting with a child while they are learning something new helps them solidify what they are learning.  It provides opportunity to give direct corrective feedback and build on what is already established or it can provide errorless learning because of the prompts and cues we provide.  This can become key to success for those that struggle with language or learning in general.

Making boards that are in game format provides an opportunity for interaction.  We can check for learning while having fun with the child.  Another way to create interaction is to make boards that are of a high personal interest.  Using things from the child’s environment by taking a pictures and creating boards with these real world items opens the door for independence, word use and discussion.

Let’s say we are working on a vocabulary goal around clothing and sentence expansion.  Since it’s winter and we want to make sure the child knows the words boots, coat, mittens and hat.   We can take pictures of their personal items, use one of the in-app visual templates and create a check list for them.  As they dress we can have them move a check mark or happy face to the item they are putting on, prompting them to say the word or use the word in a sentence.  We could also have a picture of them all dressed up at the top so they can see what their end goal is before going outside supporting executive functioning skills.Using the app to create the board takes only a few minutes and can be done on the spot with the help of the child by asking them to get each item, placing it on the floor and taking picture of it with the iPad.(*This part can also be an evaluation of whether or not the child knows what the item is.)  Children love to be involved in this way.  It also creates a personal investment on the end of the child.  They have ownership because of their involvement in the creation processes.

With the in-app share options you can quickly email or text the board to parents or others who work with the child so they can add it into their folder of boards for this child allowing the child to have access to this newly created board in a variety of settings.

Increase the opportunity to practice the new vocabulary and watch the language bloom.

Next week – samples of interactive boards

Here is another example, we used of getting dressed in the blog. A great thanks to my model she gave me permission to share her photo. Here are 3 examples of how to modify the board to fit your students.

Some people have asked me for examples on how it looks on the iESLp App app here is an example of a board created with a high interest area, including social thinking strategies. I am extremely fortunate with the educational support staff I work with and they come up with amazing boards to support our students. Here is a board created by an educational support staff.

Tracking Positive Events

With Christmas and New Years over, January can be a bit of a let down for both adults and kids.  Help build a brighter look at life into your weekly note taking with these calendar sheets.  They can be used by adults or students/clients.  Save the boards to your camera roll, then add them into the app either month by month or all at once.  Week by week you type in your comments.  At the end of every month you could save the board with all your thoughts back into your camera roll. These could then be added one by one into a Keynote or PowerPoint presentation which you could play at the end of the year to look back at all the good things that happened.

Camera Roll Pop In Board Games

BOARD GAMES PROVIDE A LEARNING OPPORTUNITY THROUGH PLAY & FUN

As we approach the fun and festive days of Christmas holidays we can add learning to the mix with board games.   Spending some time playing a board game with children can build healthy social bonds and include language or academia skills in a variety of ways.  Family time , with the entertainment and fun of playing a game together, helps children (and adults) create positive memories of time spent together.  Using iESLp app you can build a board game together in a few minutes.  The game you build is then tailored  to the specific interest of the players.

Below are 3 fun board games you can add into the app through the camera roll.  Check out the tutorial video.  Along with the boards, you will need one standard six sided dice to play the games.
